Hi friends,
I hope you’ve been well!
I spent last week learning about ear health and I’m here to share about it.
Specifically, I spoke to Sharad Govil, audiologist and group CEO of Amazing Hearing Group.
Here’s how our conversation went.
A few key takeaways for me:
Impact of Hearing Loss
Hearing loss is gradual and it may seem unimportant
That said, it can lead to dementia, depression, and more ‘painful’ health issues
When someone has hearing problems, the entire family has a hearing problem
Nature of Hearing Loss
More common in males
More common in seniors
Prevention starts early - good hearing now doesn’t mean good hearing as you age
What to Do
If hearing loss is sudden, visit an ENT doctor or A&E within 24 hours to prevent permanent damage
Listen to music at less than 60% max volume and less than 60 minutes at a go
Visit an audiologist to get your hearing checked if you find yourself asking others to repeat their words and/or keep turning the volume up
My Own Hearing
Courtesy of Sharad, I’ve got my own hearing checked.
The experience reminded me of my military days when we had to do a pre-enlistment health check - sitting in a booth and questioning if I’d heard the beep or if I was imagining one.
After I’d done the check, I was given a result sheet, which includes the chart below.
In gist, it shows your hearing loss severity at different frequencies.
I’m glad my hearing is still decent, for now at least.
Ok, I’m downplaying it - I had a huge sigh of relief when I saw my results because I haven’t been paying attention to my ear health at all. 😅
Getting Your Hearing Checked
If you’ll like to get your hearing checked, please feel free to reach out to Sharad or Amazing Hearing.
(This is not a sponsored post by the way.)
Your experience will likely include a hearing screen like the one I did, as well as the consultation experience Sharad elaborated on in our vodcast.
Hope you give it a watch.
And if you like to follow my health journey, please feel free to subscribe to this newsletter and/or the YouTube channel.
Till next time, take care!
Kindest,
