Hi there!

Top Three Healthy Ageing Highlights
👋🏻 A quick introduction if you’re new here.
I highlight three healthy ageing insights each week to fast-forward Singapore’s health span vs lifespan gap reduction.
If you know of anything I should include, please email me. 🙏🏻
Otherwise, here goes:
1. Insights from Integrated Women’s Health Programme
The Integrated Women’s Health Programme (IWHP) is a longitudinal study focused on Asian women in midlife, investigating female-specific health issues such as menopause, osteoporosis, and poor sleep.
Here are some of the key findings:
In Singapore, instead of hot flushes, muscle and joint aches are the top menopause-related complaints. These were previously attributed to aging or osteoarthritis, but IWHP studies have identified the cause to be related to the menopause transition.
Poor muscular strength (measured by grip strength and repeated chair stand performance) is strongly associated with diabetes, even after adjusting for obesity.
Women with poor muscular strength had more than double the risk of diabetes, regardless of age, race, menopausal status, smoking, and obesity.
The development of hypertension could be linked to pregnancy-related complications from many years ago.
Besides reducing body mass index, strength training and menopause hormone therapy have been shown to increase the healthspan of women in midlife.

2. Video: A Singaporean Tried Everything to Fix Her Sleep in 14 Days
How do you know if you have sleep apnea?
What is it like to track your sleep?
Is a sleep retreat beneficial?
In her latest video, Terese Lim from Our Grandfather Story answered these questions and explored various solution providers for better sleep in Singapore .
I found her experience insightful and worth sharing with anyone who is trying to improve their sleep.
3. What Progress Looks Like In A Drop Jump
You might have done drop jumps for strength assessments or as part of your plyometric training.
A way to gauge improvement is higher jumps, but that’s not the only way.
Here’s how drop jump progress can look like on force-trace curves:
Smoother landings with reduced impact peaks, demonstrating good eccentric capacities
Shorter contact times (<250ms), showing good stretch-shortening cycle mechanics
Longer flight times, indicating better power output
Such analyses are useful since power deteriorates faster than strength as you age, and are better indicators of your physical function.

Our team sifts through key studies to uncover insights that may not be on your radar.
This week, we summarised a paper that provided insights into the experiences of athletes who completed their ACL rehabilitation and successfully returned to sport.
The key insight:
Athletes had strategies to ensure their safe return to sport and understood the high re-injury risk. Healthcare professionals and coaches can provide more support and guidance on return to sport.
