Hi there!
This is Jing, founder of ALLSET.
Top Three Healthy Ageing Highlights
👋🏻 A quick introduction if you’re new here.
I highlight three healthy ageing insights each week to fast-forward Singapore’s health span vs lifespan gap reduction.
If you know of anything I should include, please email me. 🙏🏻
Otherwise, here goes:
1. Strength vs Power as Mortality Predictors
A paper, ‘Muscle Power Versus Strength as a Predictor of Mortality in Middle-Aged and Older Men and Women’ was recently published.
The research’s main takeaways:
The lowest muscle power group had >6x higher mortality risk than the highest group
For strength, the correlation is only ~1.6x
For context, researchers previously found VO2 max’s lowest quartile and top 2.5 percentile correlates to 5x mortality risk.
The takeaways highlight the importance of training for the right metric during strength workouts and raise the question…
Are you training for power?
(See point 3 if you need help.)
2. Strength Baselines for Endurance Running
Many people run to stay healthy, but research found that 50% of runners experience an injury each year.
A recent article shared about strength assessments and strength baselines for endurance running, which can help runners stay injury-free.
3. Three Use Cases Behind Strength Assessments Going Mainstream
Strength assessments help you with the points mentioned above:
Testing and training for power as you age
Testing strength baselines for injury-free running
But there are other use cases too.
If you would like to do a strength assessment to help with healthy ageing or to improve your sports performance, please contact me. I’m offering a special promotion in May!
Paid Tier Research Summary Preview: How to Optimise Strength Training Recovery During Competition Season?
Our team sifts through key studies to uncover insights that may not be on your radar.
This week, we summarised a paper on the effects of isometric strength training vs heavy resistance training on neuromuscular function.
A key insight:
Isometric training could be used as an important training tool, compared to heavy resistance training, if the goal was to optimise recovery.
